What is Fish Tagging?
Tagging fish has been a practice that dates as far back as the 1600’s, though it started gaining momentum in the 1800’s with a primary focus on salmon species, and by the 1940’s the science of fish tagging had become the standard method of studying fish.
Fish tagging allows anglers, scientists, and conservationists alike to understand how each species survives and thrives on a much deeper level.
How Does it Work and Why is it Important?
Data is collected when an already tagged fish is recaptured at a later date. “The catch information is linked to the original tag and release, and then compared to the recapture data” as explained in an article by takemefishing.org. The tags gather information on movement, location, depths traveled and water temperatures.
The article goes on to say, “The data provided by tagging programs helps fisheries biologists understand more about fish movements or patterns, growth, habitats, and mortality rates. This information is vital to improve the conservation and management of game fish species and can help encourage catch and release best practices that contribute to healthy fish populations.”
Sport Fishing In Costa Rica
Being one top destinations for sport fishing in the world, there are many who are interested in contributing to these efforts here in Costa Rica. In fact, we are proud to report earlier this month, Maverick Yachts Costa Rica, located out of Los Sueños Marina, took part in an epic fish tagging event sponsored by Gray FishTag Research, Inc.
On August 5th, 2022, the teams successfully deployed a satellite tag on a black marlin for the first time in Costa Rica. They were also able to snag themselves a blue marlin on the same trip. While black and blue marlin were their top priority they also able to catch a cubera snapper, wahoo, sailfish, yellow fin tuna and dorado in the same day. Talk about a great day of fishing in Costa Rica!
