Costa Rica offers some of the best bill fishing in the world; especially within a 50-mile radius of Los Sueños Resort and Marina. Charters regularly reel in record-breaking marlin and sailfish fishing the relatively nearby offshore seamounts from the Nicoya Peninsula to the border of Nicaragua.
From December to March, the Papagayo trade winds blowing east to west off Lake Nicaragua can make offshore fishing a challenging prospect. However, as the dry season begins in December, the winds calm and anglers, novice to expert will find great bill fishing from Jacó and the Los Sueños marina down to Golfito, including the Osa Peninsula. From December into April, sailfish, and occasional marlin, are practically jumping into the boat. Rooster and reef fishing are great alternatives for anglers at any time of the year. Many experts consider roosterfish to be one of the best sport fish in the ocean.
The waters of the gulf of Papagayo are home to some of the biggest roosterfish in Costa Rica. From June through October, even the least experienced angler can expect to land sailfish marlin, tuna and dorado, often in one trip. Seasonal changes from wet to dry and back again in May and November, offer great fishing in any part of Costa Rica. Deep waters and the migration patterns means sailfish, marlin, roosterfish, dorado, tuna and more than 15 other varieties can show up at any point in the year. Los Sueños is the sail fishing central center from December to April. In January starts Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown Billfish series.
The series spans three months: Leg I, Jan. 18-21; Leg II, Feb. 22-25, and Leg III, March 22-25. February tends to have the highest concentration of sailfish and the possibility of 20 or 30 hookups a day. Double-digit sailfish releases and world records are broken regularly in when anglers can expect relatively flat, calm seas and great weather.
