Nature's Forces at Work in Costa Rica

There was a large earthquake, reported at 7.6 on the Richter scale, about 8 km NE of Playa Samara in Costa Rica's northern province of Guanacaste. Although it shook us here in Los Sueños, there was no major damage in the area and all is back to normal here on the Central Pacific. Earthquakes happen with relative frequency in Costa Rica, though rarely of this magnitude.

The last similar earthquake in 1950 caused extensive damage throughout the country. Costa Rica is sparsely populated with highest building code standards of any country in Central America, hence we rarely see any serious damages or deaths from these earthquakes. In fact the geothermal and tectonic plate activity in this area make give Costa Rica some of it's most amazing tourist attractions Arenal, Poas, and Irazu Volcanos are just a few of the numerous volcanos that bring thousands of tourists to Costa Rica each year. Costa Rica is located where two tectonic plates meet, pushing one block of crust beneath the other. It’s why the country is also one of the most volcanically-active places in the world, with the last major eruption from the famous Arenal . Poás Volcano is a powerful symbol of the geothermal forces that formed Costa Rica. The crater is 1,050 feet (320 meters) deep.

At almost a mile (1.6 km) across it's also the largest active crater in the world, with a sulfuric, bubbling green rain fed lake at the bottom. Five-time Grammy winner Lady Gaga will bring her Born This Way Ball to Costa Rica on Saturday November 3rd . Lady Gaga’s concert at the National Stadium in San Jose, Costa Rica, will be the only show held in Central America! Make it a Paparazzi weekend , hire a driver and just dance!

The Annual Los Sueños Resort Marlin Invitational scheduled for December 12-15, 2012 rings in the fishing season on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific Coast. Target species are marlin (all species) and pacific sailfish. Points will be awarded for each successful release with marlin releases counting for 1000 points and pacific sailfish for 100 points.
